What is self coaching?

Most of us will be familiar with the concept of coaching, generally a 121 interaction where business of life coaches support and encourage you in making better decisions about your work and personal life.

This is different to counselling which looks back into your childhood and past and uses techniques like timeline therapy. Put simply, coaching is more focused on the here and now rather than past events.

But what about situations where you don’t have access to a coach or in the moment when you need to deal with stress and anxiety on your own.

Learning to self coach can be a really effective way to help you stay positive and make better decisions.

Here are some simple ways you can self coach:

1. Self talking:

– Asking yourself questions – in the heat of the moment stop and ask yourself questions: Why am I acting in this way? How could I do things differently? What is the effect of my behaviour on those around me?

– Affirmations – make some positive statements to encourage positive thinking and discourage negative thoughts, for example “I can do this”; “Calm and positive”

2. Writing things down – write down how you feel, that’s what I did and you are seeing the results on this website!

3. Coaching each other – friends, partners, colleagues; Try to help each other by asking questions.
